Volunteer One Hour on April 19th to Read in a local Elementary School Classroom!

Birmingham Reads is an annual city-wide celebration of reading that places a volunteer to read in every single Birmingham City Schools classroom. On Birmingham Reads Day, a single hour of your time can ignite a passion for learning!

Birmingham Reads is a collaborative program of Better Basics (A United Way Partner Agency), the Junior League of Birmingham, and Scholastic.  Last year on Birmingham Reads Day, 692 volunteers visited 626 classrooms and read to over 13,000 students.  In addition, over 45,000 books were donated to the children served by Better Basics.

For Birmingham Reads Day 2018, on April 19th, Drummond Company employees will volunteer at three schools; Avondale Elementary, Hudson K-8 School and Huffman Academy.  Management from ABC Coke, Perry Supply, LPUC and Aviation department will staff and coordinate volunteers from their locations.  During the event, from 1-2pm, each volunteer will read to their designated classroom, hold Q&A, and be provided books to give to each of the students to take home!

If you cannot get away from the office, but are interested in helping, you can donate books online by visiting www.scholastic.com.

Drummond will also partner with Better Basics in the next school year to provide a much-needed reading intervention program to Tarrant Intermediate School. Stay tuned!
