Bogotá, January 13, 2022

Once again, and for the sixth consecutive year, Drummond Ltd. is the leading company in coal exports in Colombia. During 2021, our mining operations shipped 31,545,000 tons to the international market, 6% more than in 2020, when it sold 29,719,000.

Turkey tops the list of recipient countries, with 21.9% of annual exports. They are followed by Brazil, with 13.6%; Chile, with 9.7%; South Korea, with 8.9%; Israel, with 7.6% and China, with 7.5%. In total, Drummond reached more than 21 countries, with Asia, Eurasia and the Middle East regions accounting for 50.3% of its exports in the past 12 months.

In turn, in 2021 the company’s operations generated $368.2 million dollars in royalties for the country, and close to $238 million dollars in taxes, tariffs and contributions, which constitute an important and direct contribution to the sustainable economic reactivation of the regions where we operate, and the country. These results were achieved in a challenging year due to the duration of the pandemic and its effects on the global economy.

During this time, the purpose of the company, in addition to maintaining its competitiveness and leadership in the sector, was to continue working to generate a positive impact on a social, environmental and economic level.

“It should be noted that the most recent study by the “Mining Compass” (Brújula Minera) reported that the social license or acceptance of the mining activity in the Cesar and Guajira regions achieved the ‘trust threshold’. This means that the communities not only consider the companies that develop this industry legitimate, and believe or approve of their operations, but companies like Drummond managed to build processes of deep trust. That fills us with pride,” said José Miguel Linares, president of Drummond Ltd., who added that Drummond’s level of favorability in Cesar went from 65% in 2018 to 80% in 2021.

In this regard, the latest study by Brújula Minera, which conducted public opinion polls in Cesar and La Guajira, found that there is greater visibility of the positive contributions that mining companies -like Drummond- generate in their surroundings. For example, 45% of the surveyed population assured that the sector that contributes the most to their region is mining, and 49% perceive that it is also the one that generates the most employment, even above agriculture (22%).

“It fills us with satisfaction and gratitude to see that a well-done mining project not only generates excellent results, but also has the ability to contribute to the well-being and prosperity of the communities,” added Linares.

The efforts of the company and the mining industry are reflected in the positive perception of people around them: 94% of those surveyed in Cesar and La Guajira agree that mining well done brings development to the regions where it operates, and 92% fully agree that it is possible for mining to build consensus with communities.

Committed to maintaining and increasing the well-being of its people, Drummond is preparing to continue supporting the country’s economic recovery in 2022 and to ensure that competitiveness translates into a better quality of life for the communities in its area of influence.
